Sailboat, catamaran or motorboat in Menorca: how to choose

Choosing the right boat can completely change your experience in Menorca.

A couple looking for a quiet afternoon around the coves of the south coast probably does not need the same boat as a group of ten friends. A family looking for plenty of deck space may have different priorities from someone who wants speed, luxury or several nights on board.

That is why there is no single “best boat” for Menorca.

Start with the number of passengers, the departure point, your budget and how you want to divide the day between navigation and time at anchor. Those details help you compare specific boats, rather than choosing by category alone.

Our boat trips in Menorca depart from Cala Galdana aboard our own classic sailboat, privately for up to five passengers plus the skipper. We operate on the south coast. For larger groups or other types of boat, we help look for options with independent local operators; their capacity, departure port, prices and conditions need to be confirmed for the chosen vessel.

This guide explains the differences we see in practice.

A useful distinction: a catamaran has two hulls and can be a sailing boat or a motorboat. Here, “sailboat” refers mainly to a cruising monohull like ours, while “catamaran” refers to the wider cruising boats guests commonly compare with it. None of these names, by itself, tells you the permitted passenger capacity or whether a trip is private.

Quick Answer: Which Boat Should You Choose in Menorca?

If you want the short version:

Consider a small private sailboat if your group fits its capacity and you value sailing when conditions allow, a close view of the coast and a compact, personal setting. Swimming time depends on the departure point and programme, not just on having sails.

Consider a cruising catamaran if usable deck space is a priority. Check the exact passenger limit, shaded seating and cabin arrangements; the number of berths is not the same as the number of guests accepted for a day charter.

Consider a motorboat if reducing travel time between distant places matters to you. Compare the planned cruising pace, seating and weather limits rather than relying on a headline maximum speed.

Consider a larger motor yacht when you specifically want its interior facilities, outdoor areas or service. Check what is included and whether fuel is charged separately before comparing the total with another boat.

But the type of boat is only part of the decision.

Where the boat departs from can be just as important as how fast it goes.

1. Sailboat: sailing, space and pace aboard

A sailboat makes most sense when the experience itself matters more than travelling the greatest possible distance.

That is how we use our own boat.

Our classic sailboat departs from Cala Galdana, already positioned in the middle of one of the most attractive sections of Menorca’s south coast.

This gives us relatively short navigation distances towards coves such as:

  • Cala Mitjana and Mitjaneta;
  • Trebalúger;
  • Escorxada;
  • Cala Fustam;
  • Macarella and Macarelleta;
  • Cala Turqueta.

Because we are already close to these areas, we do not need a high-speed boat simply to reach beautiful coastline.

Instead, the trip can focus more on:

  • swimming;
  • snorkelling;
  • paddleboarding;
  • relaxing at anchor;
  • spending longer in a cove;
  • enjoying the coastline at a slower pace.

Who Is a Sailboat Best For?

From our experience, a small private sailboat is particularly suitable for:

  • couples;
  • families;
  • groups of friends of four or five people;
  • travellers who prefer privacy;
  • guests looking for something simple and authentic;
  • people who want to spend more time swimming than travelling.

Our own boat carries a maximum of five guests plus the professional skipper, which keeps the experience very personal.

For photographs and details of the actual boat, see our private sailboat from Cala Galdana.

The Advantage of Sailing

When wind direction and strength allow it, sailing without relying entirely on the engine creates a very different atmosphere.

There is less engine noise, the pace is slower and travelling between coves becomes part of the experience rather than simply transportation.

However, it is important to be realistic.

On a day trip, a sailboat uses its engine as well as its sails.

The engine is needed for manoeuvring, entering and leaving the harbour, periods without suitable wind and situations where the route or timetable makes sailing impractical.

The objective is not to avoid the engine at all costs.

It is to enjoy sailing when conditions make it sensible.

On a smaller monohull, also look at where your group will sit while moving, the room to pass around the cockpit and the route to the bathing ladder. A comfortable place at anchor is not necessarily a seat used underway. These practical details are more useful than assuming every sailboat offers the same layout.

2. Catamaran: usable space and capacity

One of the most common reasons guests ask us for a catamaran is simple:

there are too many people for our own boat.

We regularly receive enquiries from groups of six, eight, ten people or more.

At that point, trying to fit everybody onto a small boat is obviously not an option. A catamaran can make much more sense.

Why Does a Catamaran Offer More Space?

Catamarans use two hulls connected by a wide central platform.

That design normally creates considerably more usable deck and living space than a small monohull sailboat.

Depending on the model, there may be:

  • large outdoor seating areas;
  • sunbathing space;
  • interior saloon;
  • several cabins;
  • toilets and showers;
  • kitchen facilities;
  • shaded areas;
  • equipment for swimming and water activities.

This makes catamarans particularly attractive for groups that want to spend an entire day together without feeling restricted by space.

Are Catamarans More Stable?

This needs a little nuance.

Catamarans generally heel less than sailing monohulls and their wide platform can feel very stable when anchored or in suitable conditions.

But no boat should be described as universally “stable” regardless of the sea.

Comfort still depends on:

  • the individual boat;
  • its size and design;
  • wind;
  • swell;
  • direction of travel;
  • sea state;
  • skipper decisions.

A catamaran can be an extremely comfortable platform, but it does not make waves disappear.

Catamarans for Overnight and Multi-Day Charters

This is one area where the difference becomes particularly important.

For overnight plans, we can ask local operators about cruising catamarans equipped for stays aboard. Cabins alone do not confirm that overnight charter is available: the boat, dates, sleeping capacity and service must all be checked. Our own sailboat is used for day trips, not overnight stays.

Depending on the boat and operator, guests may be able to book:

  • full-day charters;
  • overnight stays;
  • several days;
  • weekly charters.

For someone who wants the boat to become part of the holiday accommodation rather than simply an activity for a few hours, this is a completely different experience from our small day-trip sailboat.

Who Is a Catamaran Best For?

We would normally consider a catamaran when:

  • your group has more than five guests;
  • space is one of your main priorities;
  • you want something more premium;
  • you have children and value additional room;
  • you are planning a celebration;
  • you want to spend a full day aboard;
  • you are considering sleeping on the boat;
  • you are interested in a multi-day charter.

We work with different local operators depending on availability, group size, departure area and budget.

Our page on catamaran charter options in Menorca explains how we handle these requests through local partners.

3. Motorboat: travel time and comfort underway

The main advantage of a motorboat is straightforward:

speed.

If you want to cover more coastline in limited time, a suitable motorboat can travel between areas much faster than a small sailboat.

That can be useful when:

  • your departure point is farther from the coast you want to explore;
  • you want to see locations that are far apart;
  • navigation time needs to be reduced;
  • the journey between stops is less important to you than the destinations.

However, motorboats vary enormously.

A small open boat and a 12-metre premium motor yacht are technically both powered boats, but the experience, comfort, price and fuel consumption can be completely different.

A faster boat does not guarantee a smoother ride. Sea conditions, hull design, seating and the speed chosen by the skipper all affect comfort. For an open motorboat, check the shelter from sun and spray and the seating used during passages. A sunbathing area shown in a photograph may be intended for use at rest.

4. Motor yacht: facilities, service and overall cost

Many of the larger powered boats requested by our clients are better described as motor yachts rather than simple motorboats.

These are usually aimed at guests who want a more premium experience.

Depending on the vessel, you may find:

  • large sunbathing areas;
  • comfortable interior spaces;
  • cabins;
  • bathrooms;
  • kitchens;
  • premium upholstery;
  • powerful engines;
  • high cruising speeds.

They can be excellent boats.

They are also usually substantially more expensive than a small private sailboat.

Departure Point Makes a Difference

Many larger motor yachts operate from places such as Ciutadella or Mahón rather than Cala Galdana.

This matters.

If the objective is to explore the central south coast, a boat departing from one of those ports has farther to travel before reaching some of the famous coves around Cala Galdana.

A powerful motor yacht can compensate for this with speed, but there is still navigation involved.

This is why comparing boats only by maximum speed can be misleading.

Our own sailboat is much slower, but it starts close to the places our guests normally want to visit.

For a four-hour trip, the departure point can matter as much as speed. Ask how much of the booked time is expected to be spent travelling to and from the area you want to explore.

5. What About Fuel Costs?

This is another important difference.

On our own private sailboat trips, fuel is included in the advertised price.

With larger motorboats and motor yachts, however, the pricing model varies between operators.

Some charters include fuel.

Others charge fuel separately according to actual consumption or the planned route.

With powerful motor yachts, this additional cost can be significant.

When comparing quotes, start with the total cost of the same duration and a comparable route. Then check the inclusions:

  • Is fuel included?
  • Is the skipper included?
  • Are taxes included?
  • Are drinks or catering included?
  • Is there a security deposit?
  • Are there additional cleaning or port fees?
  • What route is included in that price?

A €1,000 charter and a €1,000 charter are not necessarily the same thing if one includes fuel and the other does not.

6. Which Boat Is Best for Couples?

For two people, bigger does not automatically mean better.

A large catamaran or yacht can provide more space and luxury, but a couple may not need most of that capacity.

For couples who want a relaxed few hours swimming around the south coast, a small private sailboat can create a much more intimate experience.

On a private booking, the passengers are your own group whichever boat you choose. The difference is the amount and arrangement of space, and how the operator runs the outing within the agreed duration and conditions.

For a special occasion where luxury and onboard facilities are the priority, a yacht or premium catamaran may make more sense.

The right question is not:

Which is the most impressive boat?

It is:

Which boat creates the experience we want?

7. Which Boat Is Best for Families?

Group size matters enormously here.

A family of four or five may fit perfectly on a small private sailboat.

You can swim, snorkel and spend time together without sharing the boat with another group.

Once the family becomes larger, however, space starts to matter.

For six, eight or more guests, a larger sailboat or catamaran will usually make much more sense.

Families with young children may also value:

  • more deck space;
  • shade;
  • toilets;
  • cabins;
  • easier movement around the boat.

Look at the actual boat rather than assuming a category will suit every family.

Tell the operator the number and ages of the children and any boarding concerns. Ask about suitable seating, shaded areas and access to the toilet and water. Extra deck space can help, but it does not replace checking those details on the boat you would actually book.

8. Which Boat Is Best for Large Groups?

This is one of the easiest decisions.

Our own sailboat legally carries a maximum of five guests.

If you contact us as a group of six, eight, ten or more, we need to find another solution.

Depending on your budget and preferences, that may be:

  • a larger sailing boat;
  • catamaran;
  • motorboat;
  • motor yacht.

For groups beyond our own boat’s capacity or requests for a different vessel, see our boat hire with skipper and larger-boat options.

We work with trusted local operators and can help look for a suitable boat according to:

  • date;
  • number of guests;
  • preferred departure area;
  • boat type;
  • trip duration;
  • approximate budget.

Partner boats may depart from Cala Galdana or from other ports around Menorca depending on the selected vessel and operator.

9. Which Boat Is Best If You Want to Explore Many Places?

A suitable motorboat can be useful when the places you want to visit are far apart.

If you want to travel rapidly between areas that are far apart, speed matters.

But that is not how everybody wants to spend a boat trip.

Our own approach from Cala Galdana is almost the opposite.

Rather than trying to travel as far as possible, we prefer short navigation periods combined with longer swimming and anchoring stops.

For many guests, visiting three beautiful places properly is more enjoyable than seeing seven from the boat for a few minutes each.

So ask yourself:

Do I want to cover coastline, or do I want to spend time in the coves?

That question often tells you more than the boat’s top speed.

10. Which Boat Is Best for a Premium Experience?

The value of a higher-priced boat depends on which facilities and services you will actually use.

For some people, premium means:

  • a large yacht;
  • cabins;
  • catering;
  • lots of space;
  • powerful engines;
  • luxury finishes.

In that case, a motor yacht or high-end catamaran will normally be the right direction.

For others, premium means:

  • privacy;
  • space reserved for your group;
  • a local skipper;
  • swimming somewhere quiet;
  • not rushing;
  • a simple drink aboard;
  • spending several hours with only their family or partner.

In that case, a small private sailboat can feel far more special than a much larger vessel.

Price and size do not automatically determine the quality of the experience.

11. How We Help Guests Choose the Right Boat

We receive many enquiries from visitors who simply ask for:

“a private boat in Menorca.”

Often, they do not yet know whether a sailboat, catamaran or motorboat actually suits their plans.

The first questions we normally need to answer are much simpler:

How many people are travelling?

What kind of experience do you want?

Where are you staying or where would you like to depart from?

How long do you want to be on the water?

What is your approximate budget?

From there, the choice usually becomes much clearer.

For a couple or small group interested in a relaxed south-coast experience, our own sailboat may be the simplest and most authentic option.

When there are six, eight or more people, we usually need to look for a larger catamaran or yacht through one of the local operators we work with.

Some guests want maximum space.

Others want luxury.

Some want to sleep aboard for several nights.

Others simply want four peaceful hours swimming around Cala Galdana.

There is no reason to recommend the same boat to all of them.

The best boat is the one that matches the experience you actually want.

12. Sailboat vs Catamaran vs Motorboat: Quick Comparison

PriorityWhat to compare
Couple or small private groupCapacity, seating and privacy on the specific boat
Sailing when conditions allowSailing monohull or sailing catamaran, with suitable wind
Long swimming stopsDeparture point, route and time allocated to stops

These are general guidelines rather than rules.

The individual boat, departure port, weather and operator matter just as much as the category of vessel.

Once you have narrowed down the boat type, our guide to choosing a boat trip in Menorca helps you compare the departure area, format and duration of the outing.

Final Advice: Choose the Experience Before the Boat

It is easy to start searching by boat type:

sailboat, catamaran, motorboat, yacht.

We suggest doing it the other way around.

First decide:

  • how many people are travelling;
  • whether privacy matters;
  • whether you want to sail or travel quickly;
  • how much space you need;
  • whether you want to sleep aboard;
  • whether luxury is a priority;
  • how much time you want to spend swimming;
  • where in Menorca you want to explore.

Then choose the boat.

For couples, families and groups of up to five, our own sailboat offers private day trips from Cala Galdana along the south coast. We balance navigation and swimming stops according to the booked duration, your preferences and the sea conditions.

For larger groups or different requirements, we can also help you find an appropriate catamaran, larger sailboat or yacht through our local partners.

There is no single perfect boat for Menorca.

There is simply a boat that makes more sense for the day you want to have.
