Renting a boat with a skipper is one of the easiest ways to discover Menorca from the sea without having to worry about navigation, anchoring or planning the route yourself.
With a professional skipper on board, you can focus on swimming, snorkeling, relaxing and discovering the coastline while the route is adapted to the wind and sea conditions.
Menorca offers very different boat rental options, from small private sailboats to larger sailing boats, catamarans, motorboats and luxury yachts. Choosing the right one depends on your group size, budget, preferred style of navigation and how much time you want to spend at sea.
This guide helps you compare a skippered booking before paying: what the quote includes, which boat fits your group, where you board and what happens if plans change. It covers day trips, with our own Cala Galdana sailboat as a practical example.
For vessels and availability, see our boat charter options with a skipper in Menorca. Our own sailboat is operated by us; larger alternatives are operated by independent local companies and need individual confirmation.

Why Rent a Boat with a Skipper in Menorca?
Menorca may look like a relatively small island on a map, but its coastline is extremely varied.
Wind direction, waves and sea conditions can make one part of the island ideal for sailing while another area is uncomfortable on the same day.
Having a professional skipper on board means that the route can be adapted according to the actual conditions rather than following a rigid itinerary.
A skipper can also take care of:
- Navigation
- Anchoring
- Manoeuvring
- Choosing suitable swimming stops
- Monitoring wind and sea conditions
- Safety on board
- Adapting the route to the group
This means you can enjoy the experience without needing a boating licence or previous navigation experience.
For many visitors, this is one of the biggest advantages of choosing a boat rental with skipper in Menorca rather than operating a boat themselves.
Benefits of Renting a Boat with a Skipper in Menorca
No Boating Licence Required
When you rent a boat with a professional skipper, you do not need your own boating licence.
The skipper is responsible for navigation and operating the vessel.
For the difference between hiring a boat with a skipper and driving a rental boat yourself, see our guide to boat hire licence requirements in Menorca.
Local Knowledge
A skipper who regularly navigates around Menorca understands how different wind directions affect the coastline and knows which areas may offer the most comfortable conditions on a particular day.
When I plan a day from Cala Galdana, I start with the wind, sea conditions, the time available and the people on board. I then choose a realistic navigation area. A longer list of coves is not automatically a better day: time spent travelling has to come out of the time available for swimming and relaxing.
More Time to Relax
Instead of concentrating on navigation, anchoring or manoeuvring, you can spend your time swimming, snorkeling, relaxing on board or simply enjoying the coastline.
A Safer Experience
Weather and sea conditions can change.
A professional skipper can adapt the route and make decisions based on safety and comfort rather than trying to reach a particular cove regardless of the conditions.
More Privacy
A skipper and a private boat are two different things to confirm. A shared excursion also has a skipper. Ask whether you are reserving individual places or exclusive use of the boat; our own sailboat trips are always private.
For the terminology, our comparison of boat charter and boat tours explains how the labels can overlap. The written booking details matter more than the name of the product.

What Type of Boat Should You Choose in Menorca?
There is no single type of boat that is best for everyone.
Start with passenger numbers and the facilities you need, then compare sailing style, space and time under way. Our guide to sailboats, catamarans and motorboats develops those differences without assuming that one boat type suits every group.
Private Sailboat
A sailboat is ideal for travellers looking for a relaxed and traditional way to experience Menorca.
Under sail, the journey can be quieter and becomes part of the experience. A sailboat may also use its engine for manoeuvres or when conditions and timing require it. If sailing under canvas is a priority, discuss that expectation before booking rather than assuming the engine will never be used.
Our classic sailboat departs only from Cala Galdana and takes up to five passengers in total, including children, plus the professional skipper. We operate private day trips on the south coast; we do not offer overnight stays on this boat.
Every trip is private and can include swimming, snorkeling, SUP and stops along Menorca’s south coast depending on the conditions.
You can learn more about our private sailboat and skipper in Menorca.
Catamaran
A catamaran can suit groups looking for more deck space. Check the specific boat, its passenger capacity, shade and boarding arrangement. Its wider platform does not guarantee a motion-free trip or that everyone will avoid seasickness.
Its wide platform makes it particularly comfortable for groups wanting to spend plenty of time relaxing on board.
Catamarans are often a good alternative when your group is larger than the legal capacity of a small private sailboat.
If you are considering this type of boat, see our catamaran options in Menorca.
Motorboat
Motorboats are useful when covering more distance is a priority.
Because they travel faster, they may allow you to explore a wider section of coastline during a half-day or full-day charter.
The trade-off is that the experience is very different from sailing and fuel consumption can have a greater influence on the final price.
Larger Sailboat
For groups that enjoy sailing but need more capacity than a small sailboat can offer, a larger sailing boat can be an excellent compromise.
You retain much of the relaxed sailing experience while gaining additional space and passenger capacity.
Luxury Yacht
A yacht may be more appropriate for travellers looking for additional comfort, space, speed or premium facilities.
Prices can vary considerably depending on the size of the yacht, model, departure point, fuel consumption and services included.
If you are looking for a yacht rather than our own sailboat, we can also help check suitable options through trusted local charter operators.
What If You Are More Than 5 Guests?
Our own sailboat carries a maximum of 5 passengers plus the professional skipper.
If your group is larger, that does not mean you have to give up on a private boat experience.
Through our network of trusted local charter operators, we can help check availability for:
- Larger sailboats
- Catamarans
- Motorboats
- Luxury yachts
The most suitable option depends on:
- Your date
- Number of passengers
- Preferred boat type
- Departure area
- Half-day, full-day or sunset
- Approximate budget
Partner boats are operated by independent licensed charter companies. Availability, capacity, departure point, prices and services included vary depending on the selected boat.
Best Routes and Areas to Explore by Boat in Menorca
Menorca offers very different landscapes depending on which side of the island you explore.
The best route on a particular day should always depend on the departure point and weather conditions.
Menorca’s South Coast
Our guide to the south coast of Menorca describes its coves and landscape: limestone cliffs, pine forests and white-sand beaches.
For boarding details and the usual navigation area, see our guide to boat trips from Cala Galdana. Depending on conditions and duration, possible coves include:
- Cala Mitjana
- Mitjaneta
- Trebalúger
- Cala Fustam
- Escorxada
- Macarella
- Macarelleta
- Cala Turqueta
- Es Talaier
The exact route should not be considered guaranteed.
Wind direction, waves, boat traffic and sea conditions can all influence which area is most enjoyable and safe on the day.
Menorca’s North Coast
The north coast has a very different character.
Its landscape is generally wilder and more rugged, with darker sand and dramatic geological formations.
Popular northern areas include places such as:
- Cala Pregonda
- Cavalleria
- Cala Pilar
- Fornells and surrounding coastline
The north and south can have very different conditions on the same day. A booking in one area does not automatically transfer to the other. Our own sailboat operates only on the south coast from Cala Galdana; a north-coast request requires a separate suitable operator and confirmation.
How Much Does Boat Rental with a Skipper in Menorca Cost?
There is no single price for renting a boat with a skipper in Menorca.
Compare the final amount for the same number of passengers, date and duration. A per-person ticket and a price for the whole boat cannot be compared directly. For a private booking, divide the confirmed total by the actual number travelling only if you want a per-person comparison; do not add passengers beyond the boat’s capacity to make the figure look cheaper.
The main factors affecting the price include:
Type of Boat
A small sailboat will generally cost less than a large catamaran or luxury yacht.
Duration
A sunset experience, half-day trip and full-day charter naturally have different prices.
Season
July and August are the busiest months in Menorca and availability is much more limited.
May, June, September and October can sometimes offer more flexibility.
Fuel
Some boat rentals include fuel in the advertised price.
Others calculate it separately according to consumption.
Always check this before booking.
Skipper
Some websites advertise a base boat rental price and add the professional skipper separately.
Others include the skipper in the total price.
Capacity
A boat capable of carrying a large group will generally cost more than a small private sailboat.
Services Included
Drinks, food, snorkeling equipment, SUP, towels, water toys and other extras vary between operators.
When comparing prices, always check what is actually included.
For our own sailboat from Cala Galdana, the price includes the professional skipper, fuel, drinks, local snacks, snorkel equipment and SUP.
For partner boats, conditions vary according to the vessel and operator.
For a published reference, our boat trips in Menorca start from €500 for four hours and €999 for eight hours on our own private sailboat. These are starting prices for the boat, not per-person tickets or quotes for partner vessels. Check the final price for your date before paying.
What to Confirm in Writing Before Paying
Ask for a single confirmation naming the operator, the boat or agreed boat category, the date, start and finish times, the boarding point, passenger numbers and the total price. Check whether the skipper, fuel, taxes and any port or cleaning charges are included. If fuel is charged separately, ask how it is calculated and when you will know the final amount.
Separate a booking deposit from a damage or security deposit: they serve different purposes. Ask how much is paid now, when the balance is due, whether a security deposit applies and how it is released. Do not assume that the payment conditions of one operator apply to another boat suggested for the same date.
Read cancellation terms before payment, including the deadline and local time used, changes to passenger numbers, late arrival and failure to attend. For weather, ask who decides whether the trip can operate, how you will be contacted and what rebooking or refund options apply if the operator cancels. A change of cove during a safe trip is different from cancellation of the entire outing.
Before I confirm a group for our sailboat, the details that matter are the total number of people, children’s ages and any difficulty boarding or using a swimming ladder. Mention these before choosing a boat, along with shade, toilet access or the amount of time you want to spend under way. A photograph of a spacious deck does not tell you whether the access will suit your group.
Confirm the meeting point before arranging transport. Our own sailboat boards only at Cala Galdana, at the quay at the end of the river; arrive ten minutes before departure. A hotel address is not a confirmed pickup point. For another operator, use the exact boarding instructions supplied with that booking.
Half-Day or Full-Day Boat Rental?
Both can be excellent choices, but they provide very different experiences.
Half-Day
A half-day boat rental is ideal if you:
- Want to combine the boat experience with other plans
- Are travelling with young children
- Mainly want to visit nearby coves
- Prefer several hours at sea rather than an entire day
From Cala Galdana, four hours can provide enough time to explore several areas of the south coast while enjoying swimming and snorkeling stops.
Full-Day
A full-day charter is better if you:
- Want to spend the entire day on the water
- Prefer a more relaxed pace
- Want longer swimming stops
- Would like to explore more coastline
- Are travelling with a group that enjoys being at sea
The additional time makes it easier to adapt the day without feeling rushed.
What About a Sunset Boat Trip?
A sunset experience is very different from a standard daytime rental.
Rather than trying to cover a large section of coastline, the focus is usually on swimming, relaxing and enjoying the final hours of the day at sea.
For couples or small groups, it can be one of the most atmospheric ways to experience the coast.
If this is the type of experience you are considering, see our private sunset boat trip from Cala Galdana.
Best Time to Rent a Boat in Menorca
June to September – Peak Boat Rental Season
These months provide the warmest conditions and the greatest choice of boat excursions and charters.
July and August are particularly busy.
If you are travelling during peak season and require a specific boat type, booking in advance is highly recommended.
May and October – Quieter Months
May and October can be excellent for travellers who prefer quieter conditions.
The sea and weather are naturally more variable than during peak summer, but suitable days can provide fantastic experiences with fewer boats along the coast.
Winter
Boat activity decreases considerably during winter and many seasonal charter operators stop running regular excursions.
Availability will therefore be much more limited.
Boat Hire with Skipper vs Self-Drive Boat Rental
When searching online, you may find both boat hire with skipper and self-drive boat rental in Menorca.
They are not the same experience.
Boat Hire with Skipper
Best for travellers who want to:
- Relax rather than navigate
- Visit different coves
- Benefit from local knowledge
- Avoid dealing with anchoring and manoeuvring
- Have the route adapted to the conditions
- Enjoy a private experience without needing a licence
Self-Drive Boat Rental
May be suitable for travellers who specifically want to operate a boat themselves and meet the licensing or boat requirements of the selected vessel.
However, navigating yourself also means being responsible for the boat, route, anchoring and sea conditions.
For travellers whose main objective is simply enjoying the coastline, a private boat hire with skipper in Menorca is generally the more relaxing option.
What Should You Bring on a Boat Trip in Menorca?
What you need depends partly on the boat, but useful items normally include:
- Swimwear
- Towel
- Sunscreen
- Sunglasses
- Hat
- Light clothing
- Mobile phone or camera
- Any personal medication
- Dry clothes if needed
Avoid bringing unnecessary luggage because storage space can be limited, particularly on smaller boats.
Footwear requirements may also vary depending on the vessel.
Is Boat Rental in Menorca Suitable for Families?
Yes, particularly when the boat is private.
Families often benefit from being able to adapt the pace of the experience rather than following a large shared group.
A private charter can allow more flexibility around:
- Swimming stops
- Time spent in each area
- When to relax on board
- How long children stay in the water
The most important consideration is choosing a boat suitable for the number and age of passengers.
Our own sailboat is suitable for groups of up to five guests and children’s life jackets are available.
For larger families, we can help look for larger sailboats or catamarans with more space.
Frequently Asked Questions About Boat Rental with a Skipper in Menorca
Do I Need a Boat Licence?
No.
When the boat is operated by a professional skipper, you do not need your own boating licence.
Can We Choose the Route?
You can tell the skipper about coves or areas you would particularly like to visit.
However, the final route always depends on the wind, sea conditions, boat characteristics and safety considerations.
A professional skipper should never promise a specific route regardless of the conditions.
Is Fuel Included?
This depends on the operator and boat.
Fuel is included in the price of trips aboard our own sailboat.
For partner boats, we will tell you what is included before confirming the reservation.
Can We Book a Sunset Boat Rental?
Yes.
Sunset charters are available during the season, although availability and departure times depend on the boat.
How Far in Advance Should We Book?
During July and August, booking early is strongly recommended, particularly for larger groups, catamarans and premium boats.
During quieter months there may be more flexibility, but availability can still be limited.
Can You Find a Boat for More Than 5 Guests?
Yes.
Our own sailboat carries up to 5 guests, but we can also help check larger sailboats, catamarans, motorboats and yachts through trusted local charter operators.
Tell us your date, total passenger numbers including children, preferred boat type and approximate budget. We can check suitable alternatives, but availability and the final offer need confirmation from the operator of that boat.
Can You Find a Catamaran or Luxury Yacht?
Yes, depending on availability.
We work with other local charter operators and can help look for catamarans, larger sailboats, motorboats and luxury yachts when our own sailboat is not suitable for the group or experience you are looking for.
A Final Check Before You Book
A good booking should leave you clear about the boat, the operator, the total cost, where to board and what happens if plans change. Keep the written confirmation and check it against your group’s needs, rather than choosing only by the largest boat or the lowest headline price.
For a concise last review, use our boat trip booking checklist. It brings the practical questions together before you commit to a particular outing.
