When searching for a day at sea in Menorca, you will often see terms such as boat tour, private boat tour, boat charter and private charter.
They can sound like completely different products.
In reality, the distinction is not always that simple.
A boat tour describes the experience: going out on a boat to explore part of Menorca’s coastline.
A private charter describes the booking arrangement: your group has exclusive use of a particular boat for the agreed period. Whether a skipper is included is a separate question that must be clear in the offer.
The same outing can therefore be described as both a private boat tour and a private charter.
At Menorca Boat Trip, for example, our boat trips in Menorca from Cala Galdana are completely private. The boat and skipper are reserved exclusively for one group of up to five guests.
A larger boat, a catamaran or a different departure point changes which vessel and operator you need, rather than creating a completely different definition of charter. Start with the practical requirements, then compare the offers that actually meet them.
So what should you actually look for?
The most useful questions are not which label the company uses, but whether the boat is private, how many people it carries, where it departs from, what is included and how flexible the experience is.

What Is a Boat Tour in Menorca?
A boat tour is an organised experience designed to show you part of Menorca from the sea.
Depending on the operator, it may be:
- shared with other passengers;
- semi-private;
- completely private.
Trips also vary considerably in duration.
Common formats include:
- short excursions;
- half-day trips;
- full-day trips;
- sunset experiences.
The operator normally has a general navigation area and style of experience, although the exact route should always remain flexible according to wind and sea conditions.
For example, our own trips depart from Cala Galdana and concentrate on Menorca’s south coast.
Because Cala Galdana is already close to coves such as Macarella, Macarelleta, Turqueta, Mitjana and Trebalúger, the experience can focus on relatively short navigation periods and longer swimming and anchoring stops.
A Boat Tour Does Not Necessarily Mean a Shared Boat
This is an important distinction.
Some visitors assume that:
boat tour = shared
and:
charter = private.
That is not always true.
A company can offer a private boat tour where the whole boat is exclusively for your family or group.
That is exactly how our own boat trips work.
So if privacy matters to you, check whether the operator says:
- private;
- exclusive use;
- whole boat;
- price per group;
rather than relying only on the words “boat tour”.
What Is a Private Boat Charter in Menorca?
A private charter means hiring a boat exclusively for your group.
A charter can be offered with a skipper or without one. This guide focuses on organised excursions and skippered options. If you are considering self-drive hire, check the operator’s requirements and your responsibilities for the specific boat before booking; do not assume the word “charter” tells you who will navigate.
The main advantage is that you can select an experience according to:
- group size;
- boat type;
- departure area;
- duration;
- comfort level;
- approximate budget.
Private charter boats in Menorca can range from small sailing boats to large catamarans and motor yachts.
This becomes particularly useful when a standard excursion does not fit what you need.
For example:
- your group has more passengers than a small tour boat can carry;
- you specifically want a catamaran;
- you want a premium motor yacht;
- you need to depart from another part of Menorca;
- you want to spend a night or several days aboard;
- you have particular requirements regarding space or facilities.
For boats and availability, see our boat charter options with a skipper in Menorca. We operate our own small sailboat; larger vessels are operated separately by local partners. A request for another port or an overnight stay needs specific confirmation and is not part of our own day-trip service.

Boat Tour vs Private Charter: Quick Comparison
| Boat Tour | Private Charter | |
|---|---|---|
| Main concept | An organised boating experience | Exclusive use of a particular boat |
| Shared or private? | Can be either | Private |
| Boat choice | Usually determined by the operator | Choose among available vessels |
| Group size | Depends on the tour | Depends on the selected vessel |
| Departure point | Fixed by the operator | Depends on available boats |
| Route | General route/area | Preferences within the agreed area and conditions |
| Skipper | Normally included on organised tours | Check whether skipper and fee are included |
| Price | Compare the total for all passengers | Whole boat is reserved for your group |
| Best for | Easy organised experience | Specific boat, larger group or particular requirements |
The important point is that these categories overlap.
A private boat tour can also be a private charter: the two terms describe different aspects of the same booking.
When Does a Private Boat Tour Make More Sense?
A small private boat tour is often the simplest choice when you do not need a large or specialised vessel.
For example, imagine:
- two people;
- a family of four;
- five friends;
- four hours available;
- staying around Cala Galdana;
- mainly interested in swimming and seeing the south-coast coves.
In that situation, searching through dozens of large charter yachts may solve a problem you do not actually have.
A small boat already based close to the places you want to explore may be simpler and more economical.
For small groups, our private sailboat in Menorca is designed precisely around this type of experience.
It carries up to five guests plus the professional skipper and focuses on a relaxed day rather than travelling the maximum possible distance.
For couples and small groups, that can be all the boat you need.
When Does a Private Charter Make More Sense?
A broader charter search becomes more useful when your requirements become more specific.
You Have More Than Five Guests
This is one of the most common situations we encounter.
We regularly receive enquiries for:
- six people;
- eight people;
- ten people;
- even larger groups.
Our own boat cannot legally carry those groups, so another vessel is required.
Depending on the number of passengers and the experience you want, that might be a larger sailboat, catamaran or motor yacht.
You Specifically Want a Catamaran
A catamaran offers considerably more space than our small sailboat and is often a better fit when capacity and room on board are priorities.
Cabins do not automatically mean that overnight stays are offered. Confirm the actual passenger capacity, the facilities you can use and whether the proposed booking is a day trip or a charter with accommodation.
For these enquiries, you can see our catamaran charter options in Menorca.
You Want a Luxury Motor Yacht
Some guests prioritise:
- speed;
- large interiors;
- premium facilities;
- comfort;
- luxury.
A larger motor yacht may then be more appropriate.
These boats are normally considerably more expensive than a small sailing trip and fuel may sometimes be charged separately.
They can also depart from ports such as Ciutadella or Mahón, so departure point needs to be considered together with speed.
You Want to Spend Several Days Aboard
A four-hour boat trip and a week-long charter are completely different products.
For overnight or multi-day stays, you need a vessel equipped for living aboard, normally with cabins, bathrooms and other facilities.
An overnight request should be checked with the operator of the proposed vessel, including sleeping capacity and the exact service offered. Our own sailboat does not offer overnight stays. Do not treat photographs of cabins as confirmation that a day-trip booking includes accommodation.
Does a Private Charter Give You Complete Freedom Over the Route?
Not completely.
This is another area where expectations matter.
Booking a private boat gives your group more flexibility, but it does not mean that every requested itinerary is possible regardless of conditions.
A professional skipper must still consider:
- wind;
- waves and swell;
- anchoring conditions;
- passenger comfort;
- boat characteristics;
- navigation time;
- safety.
You can express preferences and decide how you would like to spend the day, but the sea still determines what is sensible.
This applies to both a small private excursion and a larger yacht charter. Exclusive use gives your group privacy; it does not remove the limits of the boat, the navigation area or the conditions on the day.
Does a Charter Always Cost More Than a Boat Tour?
Not necessarily in the way people sometimes imagine.
A shared excursion is often advertised per person, while a private outing is often priced for the boat or group. Compare the final total for everyone travelling, including children, and the same duration. A low price per seat is not directly comparable with a whole-boat price until you know how many seats you need and which extras apply.
But when comparing private options, price depends much more on:
- boat size;
- type of vessel;
- engine power;
- duration;
- fuel consumption;
- facilities;
- season;
- departure port;
- services included.
A small private sailboat and a large motor yacht are both “private charters”, but their operating costs are completely different.
When comparing offers, always check whether the price includes:
- professional skipper;
- fuel;
- taxes;
- drinks;
- food;
- equipment;
- cleaning;
- port costs.
Do not compare only the headline figure.
For the details of a skippered booking, use our guide to hiring a boat with a skipper. Ask for one clear quote identifying the boat, operator, departure point, duration, included costs and cancellation terms. This makes it easier to compare offers that use different labels.
If you are still deciding whether to spend part of your holiday afloat, our guide to when a Menorca boat trip is worth it compares the experience with a day ashore and helps you weigh the value for your group.
Tour or Charter? Start With Your Group, Not the Terminology
When guests contact us, we normally do not begin by asking:
“Do you want a tour or a charter?”
We ask more practical questions:
How many people are you?
Which date are you looking for?
How long would you like to spend at sea?
Where are you staying?
Do you have a particular type of boat in mind?
What is your approximate budget?
Those answers tell us much more than the label.
As the skipper of our own sailboat, I use those answers to check whether the group fits the boat and the proposed day. Five passengers means five in total, including children, plus the skipper. I also need to know about boarding difficulties or a preference for less time under way. Those details help shape a realistic plan; calling the booking a charter does not solve a mismatch in capacity or access.
For example:
Couple or small group wanting a relaxed south-coast experience
A small private boat trip from Cala Galdana will often make the most sense.
Six, eight or more guests
We need to look for a larger charter boat.
Large group wanting space
A catamaran may be the natural choice.
Guests prioritising luxury and speed
A motor yacht may fit better.
Guests who do not yet know which boat they need
Start by comparing the different options in our guide to sailboats, catamarans and motorboats in Menorca.
Why the Departure Point Matters More Than Many Visitors Expect
Boat size and speed receive a lot of attention when people compare charters.
But location can be just as important.
Our own sailboat departs from Cala Galdana, already close to many of the coves visitors want to see on the central south coast.
A motor yacht departing from Ciutadella or Mahón may travel much faster, but it also has farther to travel if those same coves are the objective.
Neither option is inherently better.
It depends on:
- where you want to go;
- how long your trip lasts;
- how much navigation you want;
- whether speed or time at anchor matters more.
For a short trip, choosing the right departure area can sometimes be more useful than simply choosing the fastest boat.
How We Handle Both Types of Enquiry
Our own service is relatively simple.
For groups of up to five guests, we operate our classic sailboat directly from Cala Galdana.
It is designed for private, relaxed trips around Menorca’s south coast with time for swimming, snorkelling, paddleboarding and enjoying the coves without rushing.
When the group or requested boat does not fit our sailboat, we can check suitable alternatives with independent local operators, subject to availability. Their boat, skipper, equipment, terms and confirmed departure point must be identified for that offer. Our own service remains a private day trip from Cala Galdana on the south coast.
Do not assume that a boat can collect you beside your hotel. Confirm the actual boarding point before arranging transport. If another port is proposed by a partner, compare the full journey from your accommodation as well as the time spent at sea.
This means we do not have to pretend that the same boat is right for everybody.
Sometimes our sailboat is the best fit.
Sometimes it clearly is not.
Final Answer: Boat Tour or Private Charter in Menorca?
Do not worry too much about the terminology.
Instead, establish what you actually need.
Once the booking format is clear, compare the experience itself: time under way, swimming stops, space on board and the practicalities for your group. Our guide to choosing a boat trip in Menorca takes that next step, without treating the words “tour” and “charter” as competing guarantees of quality.
Both can be excellent ways to discover Menorca.
The name matters less than the actual service: check the boat, operator and booking conditions.
It is whether the boat, departure point and style of trip match the day you actually want to have.
